Lash extension aftercare: the complete guide

A pretty set is only half the job. The other half happens at home, between appointments, and it's what decides whether your lashes reach the next visit still looking full. I've gathered here everything I tell every client after the treatment anyway, so you have it all in one place.

Why aftercare matters at all

An extension holds onto your natural lash thanks to a thin layer of adhesive. That adhesive has four enemies: oil, high heat, friction and tugging. All of aftercare comes down to avoiding those four at the right moments. The more consistent you are, the longer the lashes look fresh out of the studio. It really is that simple.

The first hours after your appointment

The adhesive needs time to fully cure, and in that window moisture and heat are its worst enemies:

  • Standard adhesive: for the first 12 hours, skip water, steam and sweat, which means no shower spray on your face, no hard workout, no cooking over a steaming pot.
  • LED lamp: here the window shrinks to about 2 hours, one of the main advantages of this technology.
  • Whichever adhesive, give the sauna, pool and jacuzzi a miss for the first 48 hours.

The daily routine

Three habits that genuinely extend the life of your set:

  1. Brush your lashes daily with a dry, clean spoolie, from roots to tips, in a rolling motion. Best in the morning, after washing your face.
  2. Wash your lashes, don't avoid them, because dirt and sebum weaken the adhesive faster than water itself. Use oil-free micellar water or a lash shampoo, gently, without rubbing.
  3. Sleep on your side or back, because pressing lashes into the pillow is the most common reason for "broken" patches on one side.

The whole routine takes less than a minute a day. And it, not the appointment itself, decides how long your lashes stay looking good.

What to avoid

  • Oil-based products around the eyes, because oil dissolves the adhesive. This includes "natural" cleansing oils and some eye creams.
  • Mascara, which is unnecessary on a set, and removing it destroys the fans.
  • Lash curlers, which simply break the extensions.
  • Rubbing and "checking" your lashes with your fingers, because every tug risks pulling out an extension together with the natural lash.
  • Lash-growth mascaras and oil-based serums, which often contain something that weakens the adhesive.

Myth vs fact

There's a belief that extensions should be spared and touched as little as possible. The truth is exactly the opposite: dirty lashes fall off faster than clean ones. Sebum and product residue break down the adhesive, and clumped fans snap more easily. Regular, gentle washing isn't a threat to the set, it's the best way to make it last.

When to book your next visit

Extensions shed together with your natural lashes in their natural cycle, roughly every 60–90 days, so the set gradually loses fullness. That's normal and doesn't mean the adhesive was weak. Most of my clients book a fresh full application every 4–6 weeks: the look stays consistently fresh, and at every visit I check the condition of your natural lashes.

If you're tired of your set, don't remove it yourself. Painless removal with a cream remover costs 60 PLN and leaves your natural lashes untouched. And if you're unsure about the method for your next visit, see the classic, volume or mega guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash my face after getting lash extensions?
Yes, just sensibly. With standard adhesive, keep water, steam and sweat away from the eyes for the first 12 hours; with the LED lamp it's only about 2 hours. After that, wash your face normally, and you should actually wash the lashes too, just gently and with no oil-based products.
Why do my lashes shed faster on one side?
Almost always it's the sleeping. Pressing the lashes into the pillow on one side breaks and pulls out the fans. If you sleep on your side, try switching sides or sleeping on your back, because it's the most common reason for uneven shedding.
Can I wear mascara on lash extensions?
I'd advise against it. Mascara is unnecessary on extensions, and removing it destroys the fans and shortens retention. If you want a stronger effect, it's better to choose a denser set from the start than to add mascara.
What should I do if a lash grows crooked or pokes me?
Don't pull it out yourself, because you can easily pull the natural lash with it. Message me; single fixes are quick to sort out, and for any bigger discomfort we'll arrange a correction.
