Lamination curls the lashes you already have; extensions attach new ones to them. That's the whole difference, and the choice starts there: do you want to bring out what you have, or do you want visibly more. I work with extensions only, so I'll say up front that you'll also find the situations here where I'd send you elsewhere.
How does lamination differ from extensions?
Lamination is a chemical treatment on your natural lashes. The product changes their curl, so the lash lifts and looks longer, even though it's still the same lash. Extensions are mechanical work: I attach a single synthetic lash or a light fan to each natural one. Lamination works with what you have. Extensions add. Neither one grows you new lashes of your own: only time and your own lash cycle do that.
When is lamination the better choice?
When your own lashes are long and dense, and the only thing bothering you is that they grow straight down. Changing the curl opens the eye on its own, and that genuinely is enough. And yes, I'll say it out loud: if that describes your lashes, extensions would be spending money on an effect you already have, and you'll hear that from me at the consultation before we start anything.
When are extensions the better choice?
When what you want is density, length, or a morning without mascara. Lamination won't give you a single extra lash, so if the thing missing in the mirror is mostly volume, this is the point where extensions make sense. I match the method to the condition of your lashes and the effect you like, and I've set out the differences between classic, volume and mega separately. The final look is always chosen together, at the consultation before the appointment.
How long does each one last?
Lamination holds until your lashes renew on their own, usually somewhere around 6–8 weeks, and it fades out unnoticeably. A set looks full for less time, roughly 2–3 weeks, and we do a fresh one every 4–6 weeks. What retention actually depends on, I've broken down in the piece on how long lashes last. In practice it is simply a different rhythm: with lamination you come back less often but the effect is subtler, while with extensions you come in every 4–6 weeks for a fresh full set, which takes about two hours.
Can you move from lamination to extensions?
You can, just not overnight. Adhesive holds less well on a laminated lash, because its surface is different and a strong curl can be hard to pair with a synthetic lash. So I wait for the lamination to grow out and only then start work. Tell me about it when you book and we'll set a realistic date, rather than rescheduling once you're already in the chair. Frequently Asked Questions
Do you do lash lamination?
No. I work with extensions only: classic 1:1, volume 2D–3D and mega volume 4D–5D. If this piece leaves you thinking lamination is the better fit, look for an artist who specialises in it. I would rather say that up front than talk you into a treatment you don't need.
Can you laminate lashes that already have extensions?
No. Lamination works on your own lash, and under a set that lash is hidden beneath an extension and coated in adhesive. The product has nothing to act on, and it can weaken the adhesive while it tries. If you want to try lamination, we remove the set first.
My lashes are sparse. Will lamination add density?
It won't. Lamination lifts and curls what you already have, but it doesn't add a single lash. If what's missing in the mirror is mostly density, lamination will disappoint you.
Is the aftercare the same for both?
Not quite. After lamination the main rule covers the first day, when the lashes need to stay dry. With extensions you also avoid oils and friction for as long as you wear the set, because both dissolve or weaken the adhesive.
