How to remove lash extensions, and can you do it at home?

Lash extensions come off with a remover that dissolves the adhesive, not with force. With me it takes about 30 minutes, costs 60 PLN and doesn't hurt, and your natural lashes stay exactly where they were. If you're wondering how to remove lash extensions yourself at home, I'll answer that too, along with a list of things never worth trying.

What does professional lash removal look like?

Calm, with zero tugging. You lie with your eyes closed, I protect your lower lashes with a soft pad and apply a cream remover to the set. It's thick, so it stays on the lashes instead of running into your eye. After a few minutes the adhesive softens, the extensions slide off your natural lashes on their own, and I simply help them along. Finally I cleanse the lashes thoroughly so no remover or adhesive residue is left behind.

Can you remove lash extensions at home?

You can, as long as you don't take shortcuts. The safest home method is also the simplest: do nothing. The set will come off by itself, because each extension falls out together with its natural lash, in that lash's own cycle. It costs nothing and risks nothing; you just have to live through a few weeks of thinning lashes without picking at the ones still hanging on.

If you want it to go faster, you can help gently. For a few evenings, cleanse the eye area with an oil-based makeup remover or a bi-phase remover. Oil dissolves the adhesive, so the set starts to loosen and extensions come away as you wash. The key words are "on their own": if a lash is still holding, leave it for the next evening. When it's better to remove a set than to stretch it out is something I cover in the guide to lash extension retention.

How much does removal cost, and when is it included?

Removal on its own costs 60 PLN at my studio in Targówek. If you're coming in for a new full set, though, I take off what's left of my previous set as part of that appointment, at no extra charge. That's how every return visit works with me, every 4–6 weeks: rather than adding new lashes to old ones, I start from a clean base.

I'll also remove a set done by another lash artist: before a new set with me it's 20 PLN on top of the set price, and without a new set, removal costs 60 PLN.

What should you never do when removing lashes?

Above all, don't pull. An extension is often bonded more firmly than your natural lash is anchored in its follicle, so a tug can take both out. Beyond that:

  • Tweezers and scissors. Sharp tools right next to the eye are asking for trouble, and cut extensions stay glued on anyway.
  • Nail polish remover. Acetone has no business near your eyes, and it easily irritates delicate eyelid skin.
  • Hot steam straight to the face. Leaning over a pot is an easy way to scald yourself, and the adhesive still needs oil to dissolve afterwards.

What do your lashes look like after removal?

The same as before the set, even if they seem shorter and sparser for the first few days. That's mostly a matter of habit: for weeks you've been seeing longer, fuller lashes in the mirror. If the set was matched to your lashes and removed without tugging, there's no reason for anything else. If you do see clearly more of your own lashes gone than usual, read whether extensions can damage your lashes and message me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the remover sting?
It shouldn't. Your eyes stay closed the whole time, and a cream remover is thick enough not to run under the lid. If you feel any stinging anyway, tell me straight away: we'll stop and only finish once everything has calmed down.
What should I do if my eye stings after removing lashes at home?
Rinse it with plenty of clean, lukewarm water and don't rub it. If the stinging doesn't pass, the eye is red or your vision is affected, see a doctor rather than waiting for it to settle.
Do I need to remove extensions before an eye procedure?
Ask your eye doctor, because they know what a specific procedure requires. If they ask for the set to come off, book the removal a few days ahead so you have some margin.
